Usually between 5 and 6 feet tall, weighing around 150 to 200 pounds. They tend to use armor made of leather and bones. They are fierce looking and have an unnerving cackling laugh that can be heard from a long distance. They use the position of their tails to communicate, along with various sounds such as yelps, barks, howls and whistles.

Race Info:
Habitat: Gnolls usually live in small makeshift villages in wild and forsaken places outside of rural regions. They most often look for places from which they can launch raids on outlying and isolated rural communities of successful civilizations. Their houses are usually made of mud and bracken with thatched roofs, although some have been known to build small houses or cone shaped dwellings in some tribes.
Notes: These Matriarchal Brutalitarins live by The Law of the Strong and they worship their bloody weapons as though they are Gods. Gnolls are seriously craven and cowardly creatures. For example if there is only one of them and it is outnumbered, even by smaller creatures it will definitely not engage in battle but linger on the side waiting until it can get an advantageous position or slink off to get others. If captured they will always rat out their allies especially if torture is threatened or any kind of reward whatsoever is offered. They are just as likely to wound and kill one another in pursuit of booty as anyone else that gets in their way. They adhere to what they consider to be a Warrior Culture that brooks no perceived insult (they are quick to imagine insults where none exist) without a deadly retaliation as long as they believe they have the combat advantage. They are excessively greedy and arrogant, and thus subject to bribery and flattery, which are their true weakness. Gnolls are feral invaders who kill and pillage without warning, so long as they believe (based on careful observation) that they have a significant chance of success. If not they will slink away, watch from afar until they can get an advantage, or vanish away to come again sometime when they have better odds. When hired as mercenaries they tend to be disloyal, argumentative, and lazy. But when riled by a threat, or insult from lesser foes they become incredibly fierce and brutal. They also have cannibalistic tendencies. It is common to see Gnolls missing an ear or finger along with numerous bite marks and scars, most of which were likely caused by their own kind. All of this said, as a Trollkin race they regenerate Life Points, even back from death, at 1 point per day once dead, or 1 point per minute while alive. Thus they can be beaten to death, but it's hard to do, and their troll-skin and tufts of thick fur make them diffiult to damage. Thus, Gnolls are right in often assuming they are the overwhelming force in any given encounter. Even so, Gnolls are cautious fighters and will work as a team effectively when joined together to combat non-Gnoll foes. They are shrewd warriors and will test out their pray to look for weak members to gang up on, rather than simply rushing pell mell into battle. Nevertheless, once they are winning a battle they may easily fall into disarray if loot becomes visible, at which point they may start fighting amongst themselves, even to the death over some bauble or other. They are rotten, no good, dirtly low down scumbags, basically. There is a breed of Gnoll that are Wendangos, the Gnoll Equivalent of Berzerks. They are a take-no prisoner breed of monster, and very hard to kill.

Notes:You may notice that in some cases the character is not a human, or an elf, or any playable Race. It may also be attached to a Class that doesn't at first blush make much sense. Like a Gelatinous Cube - Thief. It may have items, or skills or spells that also don't seem to make much sense either. Or as in many cases everything fits together quite nicely. This is because the Characters and Creatures are randomly generated from any of the Public Worlds in the Mythos Machine and so they will correspond with whatever the GAMESMASTER-Author of that World configured for them. Some Worlds are massively filled out. Some not so much. So take all of these with a grain of salt, and use your imagination to think about how the elements of the Character-Creature might just happen to Work. Gelatenous Cube Thieves might just steal your stuff, and hide it somewhere in the dungeon, you know. And that dagger in its equipment list? Well it may not be able to use it, but it does possess a dagger in the middle of its gelatinous body. In other words, use your imagination wherever possible to make the pieces fit. And if all else fails - well, Roll Again!

This Character is generated randomly by the Mythos Machine using the Elthos RPG Rules under the site's Mutual Collaboration Society rules, so you can use the Character for any purpose you wish, no strings attached. You can get the rules on DTRPG, or on the Elthos.com Book Shop. The Mythos Machine supports the Elthos RPG GAMESMASTER with World Building and Game Prep features, and is a huge time saver once the GM has filled in their World on it. I am always looking for ways to improve the site and the system, so your feedback is always welcome! See something wrong, or would like to recommend an improvement? Let me know!
